Reunification | The Salvation Army Orange County

Maffey Films produced this 11-minute documentary for The Salvation Army Orange County to highlight the life-changing work of its Anti-Trafficking Services program through the story of Joel Basilio, a human trafficking survivor whose journey toward rebuilding his life led to a long-awaited reunion with his sons.

After 16 years of living separately while his sons remained in the Philippines, Joel was finally reunited with them at Los Angeles International Airport. Through intimate interviews, personal reflections, and footage of the actual reunion, the documentary captures the emotional weight of years apart and the opportunity to rebuild a relationship as a family.

The film also features Morgan Guzman, Anti-Trafficking Services Manager, and Cindy Islas, Anti-Trafficking Case Manager, who provide insight into the program's services and the support available to individuals affected by human trafficking. Their perspectives help viewers understand the work that takes place beyond a single moment, including the ongoing guidance and resources survivors need as they work toward stability and a new chapter in life.

Rather than rushing through the story, the documentary takes a thoughtful, human-centered approach, allowing Joel and his sons to share their experiences while showing the real-world impact of The Salvation Army's work. The result is a deeply personal story that brings greater awareness to human trafficking, highlights the importance of comprehensive survivor support, and demonstrates what meaningful reunification can look like.

For Maffey Films, this project represents the power of documentary filmmaking to go beyond awareness and create a genuine connection between an organization's mission and the people it serves. By combining real-life moments, personal testimony, and interviews with program leaders, the film helps The Salvation Army Orange County communicate the depth of its services and the lasting difference they can make in people's lives.
